How to build a plus-size wardrobe on a budget

Buying a whole wardrobe in one go is how people end up with a pile of clothes they never wear. It's much better to build it slowly and buy things you know you'll use. Here's how I would go about it.

Start with what you already wear

Look at your cupboard and notice what you wear most often. Then see what's missing. Maybe you have plenty of tops but no good trousers, or you have nothing smart for work. That gap is where you should start shopping.

Buy the basics first

Well-fitting trousers or leggings, plain tops in neutral colours, one dress that works for different occasions, and a cardigan or jacket will carry you a long way. These pieces mix with almost everything, so you get more outfits out of fewer items.

Think about cost per wear

A cheap top you wear once isn't a bargain. Something a little more expensive that you wear every week usually works out cheaper in the end. Ask yourself, "Will I wear this at least ten times?"

Set a limit before you shop

Decide how much you want to spend and stick to it. A promo code can help, but always check the final total at checkout. Our guide on using a promo code explains how.

Order a few pieces at a time

Ordering a small batch lets you learn what fits and feels good before you buy more. Check the delivery and returns information for your country first, so you know what to expect if something doesn't work out.

Choose colours that go together

Pick two or three colours that you like and that suit each other. Then almost everything you buy will match something you already own.
